16 New Ducklings

After many (10?) long and slow looks around followed by dropping back into the nest box and deciding not to go, the West nest duck finally called her ducklings and they went on their way at about 11:00 today. There were two unhatched eggs.

The family stayed in the creek behind our house for a while so I was able to get some photos and video. I do plan to make a wood duck video this year, combining the best parts of all four of the hatchings this spring:
May 2nd – 9 wood ducks – West nest box
May 16th – 12 wood ducks – East nest box
May 19th – 11 hooded mergansers – South nest box
June 23rd – 16 wood ducks – West nest box

So this is it for 2020: the ducks are done nesting for this year and I’ve shut down all of the cameras. I will post here again of course when I have put this year’s video online.

Thanks for watching and for all of the good comments here, via email, and on my Youtube videos. This has been fun!

Sixteen ducklings
The new family started right in on their first breakfast: nibbling on white cottonwood seeds and the water plants that have captured them.
Good luck little ducks!
